The Earth Was Completed in Genesis 1:1
Biblical Texts to Explore:
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Gap Fact Belief Premise:
They believe the Earth and Heaven in Genesis 1:1 was a complete creation inhabited by the sons of God and ruled by the anointed cherub Lucifer.
Perry Demopoulos
Verse 1 refers to the whole universe being created and inhabited with “the sons of God” (Job 38), while verse 2 refers to chaos because of sin. Verses 3-31 picture the restoration of the earth as before chaos, and its second habitation now with present man, (Adam as “the son of God” Luke chaos, and its second habitation now with present man, (Adam as “the son of God” Luke 3:38) and the new earth brought into being about 6,000 years ago.

Jeff Trout
Listen to Pastor Jeff Trout’s Description of his belief that Genesis was complete. He says when God Creates things they are: formed, complete, perfect and good with no process. He never creates things without form. Notice at the end of the audio all his “I am gonna say statements”.
He lists the following verses as his proof text saying basically when you look at these verses there is no process.
“God created them and they were complete” – Jeff Trout
- Gen 1:21 Whales
- Psalms 148:1-5 Angels, Sun, Stars, Moon, Heavens, Waters above the heavens
- Isa 43:7 says created, formed and made are used as synonyms
- Eze 28:13 Lucifer
- Gen 1:27 Man
Gap Fact Problems:
The crux of the problem is this interpretation is incomplete and based on coming to the Bible with a agenda. It’s not a complete listing of the details the bible provides on most of the verses he lists as examples. Lets dive into the scripture and see if what he states is true and matches scripture.
- Gen 1:21 Whales – He says there is no interim description or process in how they were created.
- God doesn’t just create things, the Bible says he formed all things which naturally implies they must have started without form.
- Pro 26:10 The great [God] that formed all [things] both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
- This verse obviously applies to well “all things” in the context of things formed during creation week.
- Psalms 148:1-5 stars, moon
- These verses 2-4 lists the following items from creation:
- Angels, Sun, Moon, Stars, multiple heavens, waters above the heavens.
- Then God completes the list with this verse
- Psa 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
- If all you read is the Psalm 148 scriptures he list I see how you could come to that conclusion. But if you search the Bible you find more detail. Lets look at some of the extra detail the Bible provides:
- Angels
- Job 26:13 KJV – 13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
- Multiple Heavens
- The multiple heavens where not created in an instant.
- God created the 1st and 2nd heavens on day 2 of creation when God seperated the waters and made the firmament as mentioned earlier.
- Gen 1:6-7 – 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.
- The multiple heavens where not created in an instant.
- Waters above the heavens
- This is also a reference to the waters that got pushed up during day 2 above the firmament and this is where God laid the beams of his chambers, Psalm 104:3
- The waters didn’t just instantly appear there between the 2nd and 3rd heavens, it was a process.
- Angels
- These verses 2-4 lists the following items from creation:
- Isa 43:7 says creating, form and make used as synonyms
- Isa 43:7 KJV – 7 [Even] every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
- Saying formed is a synonym to created and made is private intrepretation. Also notice all the periods between each statement. Those appear like three seperate actions to me?
- Isa 43:7 KJV – 7 [Even] every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
- Eze 28:13 Lucifer
- He quotes this verse but ignores the part of the verse where he was created in a specific 24hr day as spoken about previously with much detail.
- Job 26:13 KJV – 13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
Genesis 1:27 Man is Created Complete
The Gap fact believes Adam and Eve were created instantaneously perfect.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
“God doesn’t explain man in some unformed or uncompleted way”
Jeff Trout – Sun Jan 20, 2019 https://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=210191831535
Was Adam Without Form?
- Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
- The above verse gives much detail:
- Adam started as unformed dust of the ground. Go outside and pick up some dust and ask yourself if its formed and looks like a man.
- The verse lists a three part process.
- Adam started off “without form” just like the Earth started off “without form”, God Doesn’t leave things this way, He just wasn’t complete. It took 6 days to finish the earth and 1 day to finish Adam. Yes I will cover “Gen 1:2 without form” later,,,
- The above verse gives much detail:
DUST OF THE GROUND
WITHOUT FORM
LORD GOD FORMED
FORMING
BREATH OF LIFE
LIVING SOUL
Was Adam Complete?
Listen to Brother Jeff Trout explain Adam being complete.
Lets dig deeper and show that the COMPLETED creation of man was a process.
- Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
- Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought [them] unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that [was] the name thereof.
- Gen 2:20 KJV] 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
We have an example in creation showing that the creation was process/progression that took time throughout the 24 day like day 1
God spent 24 HOURS each day building it was a process
Day 6 started with Adam alone, God then showed Adam that the animals were not good enough either. Then God makes the perfect very good helpmeet for Adam.
In the middle of day 6, there is something that is Not Good, NOT because of some judgment,
But because God was not done with his work for that day.
This is identical to what is happening in Gen 1:2
God was not done with the Earth in Gen 1:1 or 1:2 it took 6 days to complete
BEGINNING
MAN ALONE
(NOT GOOD)
MIDDLE
MAN WITH ANIMALS
(STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH)
END
MAN COMPLETE
(PERFECT)
God Formed the Earth
So, we have seen in scripture where God didn’t just create things he forms them, implying they were without form before he formed them. Let’s look at what scripture says about the forming of the without form and void earth in Genesis 1:2.
- This is an often-quoted verse by the gap fact crowd to try and support their view. You will notice they never address the words “formed” (2x) and the word “heavens (plural).
- Isaiah 45:18 (KJV) For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else.
- Multiple heavens
- Notice the heavens are plural and the order of the heavens is BEFORE the earth is FORMED. This means the forming happened after Day 2 of creation not in Gen 1:1.
- Formed mentioned twice
- Notice that Twice the Holy Spirit tells us the EARTH was formed. This obviously implies the Earth this verse is talking about was “without form“. That must be important to mention it twice in the same verse.
- When was this earth formed??
- This naturally brings out the question: Well, when did God form it? Well, we know from above in Isa 45:18 that it was after day 2. What else does scripture tell us?
- Psa 95:5 The sea [is] his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry [land].
- This verse tells us he formed the dry land (Earth) AFTER he made the sea.
- This was day 3 of creation.
- Genesis 1:9-10 – 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry [land] appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry [land] Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that [it was] good.
- This was day 3 of creation.
- Notice the ORDER between Psalm 95:5 and Gen 1:9 is identical.
- This naturally brings out the question: Well, when did God form it? Well, we know from above in Isa 45:18 that it was after day 2. What else does scripture tell us?
Psa 95:5 The sea [is] his, and he made it:
Gen 1.9 …Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place… Gen 1:10 … the gathering together of the waters called he Seas:…
Psa 95:5 …and his hands formed the dry [land].
Gen 1:9 …and let the dry [land] appear:
Gen 1:10 …God called the dry [land] Earth
Creation Was a 6 Day Process
- Once you see the process involved in creation. This often quoted Exodus 20:11 verse makes even more sense.
- Exo 20:11 KJV – 11 For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
When Was the Earth Inhabited
- Going back to the ISA 45:18 reference it also said created it not in vain (for no reason), he formed it to be inhabited.
- He says the reason He formed it was to be inhabited? When was the earth inhabited in the scripture?
- The first inhabitants appear on Day 5 of creation..
- There are no biblical references for a prior inhabitation. The Gap Fact crowd relies on the Job 38, which is biblically impossible as shown earlier.
- He says the reason He formed it was to be inhabited? When was the earth inhabited in the scripture?
Forming The Things “Without Form”
Finally lets look at a bunch of verses where God explains that he formed many things that started “without form“.
- Psalm 90:2 (KJV) Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou [art] God.
- Amos 4:13a (KJV) For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what [is] his thought,
- Job 26:13 (KJV) By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
- Genesis 2:19 (KJV) And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought [them] unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that [was] the name thereof.
- Gen 2:7 KJV And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
- Proverbs 26:10 (KJV) The great [God] that formed all [things] both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
Gen 1:1 Being Complete Is A Private Interpretation
- 2 Peter 1:20 (KJV) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
- What is missing here is actual scripture that says in Genesis 1:1 was a done, complete, perfected earth or heaven at this point.
- In fact, one of verses Brother Jeff Trout listed as his proof text (Gen 1:27), showed clearly via Genesis chapter 2 that it was a progressive process to show Adam a help meet and make him complete the way you see it in Gen 1:27.
- We see that Adam was without form when he was mere dust of the earth.
- The done/complete/perfect/formed/Very Good scripture he is looking for doesn’t come until the end of the chapter
- Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Hath God Said,
Did God really say he formed all things?
Answer = Yes
Did God really say man was formed from unformed dust?
Answer = Yes
Did God ever say the Earth in Gen 1:1 was complete?
Answer = No
Implication:
The creation of man and women were a process and he started off as dust without form we see that God doesn’t leave it that way. He moved forward and formed Adam and then subsequently showed him he was alone and made the perfect helpmeet.
Just like the process of man and women on day 6 we see it took God 6 days to finish forming the earth and filling it. It was a 6 day process. The Earth was not complete in Genesis 1:1 as some believe.
