Darkness in Genesis 1:2

Physical Darkness In Gen 1:2 Is Bad And The Result Of A Judgement Of Lucifer

Biblical Texts to Explore:

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Gap Fact Belief Premise:

They believe the Physical Darkness we see in Genesis 1:2 was result of a judgment of Lucifer and his so-called “first kingdom in Genesis 1:1. The gist of this belief is brought by searching and referencing the the word “darkness” in the Bible.

Jeffery W Mardis on Darkness

“While none of these verses are speaking of Genesis 1:2 directly, they ARE instructive. Many, many more examples could be given, but I challenge anyone to find ONE SINGLE VERSE in the JKB that portrays “darkness” in a strong, POSITIVE context.”

Jeff Trout on Darkness

“There was no commendation on the darkness, God does Not Commend Darkness Ever in the bible, darkness is not good”

Gap Fact Problems:

A major problem with the Gap Darkness argument is that they apply all the verses in the bible about Spiritual Darkness to the Physical Darkness in creation that God designed and used for many good purposes and subsequently ignore those verses which portray it as good, important or valuable.

God Created Darkness

  • Physical Darkness in Gen 1:2 is a creation not because of some judgement, but because God Created it.
    • Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].
      • This could only have happened in Gen 1:1
  • There is NOTHING I can find in the bible that says this darkness in ISA 45:7 was created because/from a judgment.
    • In fact the bible specifically says otherwise a few versus before this to Cyrus there are benefits to darkness.
      • [Isa 45:3 KJV] 3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call [thee] by thy name, [am] the God of Israel.
  • Interestingly I searched Brother Mardis’ document, Brother Pearl’s book and Brother Demopoulos’ book as well and did not find a single reference to Isa 45:3.

Next we will search the scriptures and see the good purposes for God’s created physical darkness.

God Made Darkness to Help Animals

  • Psalms 104:20-22 : 20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep [forth]. 21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. 22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens
    • Look at the very first sentance, “Thou makest darkness, and it is night” Where have we seen this before? On day 1 of creation.
      • Genesis 1:5 KJV – 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
      • So here God is telling us that on the same day he made the darkness he also named this physical thing.
    • Now look slowly and study the rest of the scripture quoted
      • Here God tells us that physical darkness is designed so that lions can hunt at night. It also tells us they were designed to sleep in their dens during the day.
Lions Hunt in Total Darkness
  • The initial creation of physical darkness in Genesis 1:1 is not because of Judgment.  The Bible tells us it was designed and had multiple purposes.
  • FYI – I have not found any of the Gap Fact believers talk about these verses. Its conveniently left out of their Gap Fact materials just like Isa 45:3

God Made Darkness to Help Man

Now we move on to the next verse in the same psalm 104 passage. It provides more benefits of the darkness.

  • Psalms 104:23-24 : 23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. 24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
    • Verse 23 says man is designed to do all his work in the day and stop and rest in the evening.
    • The Bible calls this design richesin wisdom God made Darkness and called it night, not  in judgement
    • It seems very obvious that god made this physical darkness and called it night for many purposes and it is not from any judgement but his wisdom made them all!
  • Jesus repeats this design:
    • John 9:4 (KJV) I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
    • Notice Jesus says nothing about the night being evil, he just references the design in Psalm 104:23.

Day 4 Finishes God’s Work From Day 2

Without darkness the creations of Day 4 would not be visible. God had to create the physically dark space so these signs would be visible to humans.

  • Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
    • Without darkness we would not be able to see these signs. This is evidence of design. How many stars can you see in the daytime?
  • Gen 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
  • Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also.
  • Gen 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
  • Gen 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that [it was] good.
    • More purpose of the physical darkness to give us some light at night.
    • The goodness listed on Day 4 is not possible without physical darkness.

The Firmament (Physical Darkness) Allows The Handywork Of God To Be Displayed

  • Psa 19:1 [To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
  • Psa 19:2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
  • Psa 19:3 [There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard.
    • Without physical darkness their voice’s would NOT be heard.

The Firmament (Physical Darkness) Allows All the People to See His Glory

Psa 97:6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

No Physical Darkness in the New Heavens and Earth

  • Revelation 22:5 KJV – 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
    • This verse begs the question: Then why did God create physical darkness in the current creation.
      • Answer: God is Omniscient and outside of time.  He sees the past and the future and knew what would be required on the earth after Adam sinned.  He designed and created it based on these facts in wisdom and created them (Psalm 104) for his purposes.
  • In eternity with God there is no more sin and God will be with us and be the light.
  • In eternity there will be no stars as they will not be needed for signs, we will be with God himself.

Hath God Said,

Did God really say he made physical darkness and tell us multiple reasons why?

Answer = Yes

Did god say the physical darkness in Gen 1:2 or Gen 1:5 was not good or the result of judgement?

Answer = No

Implication:

Physical Darkness in Gen 1:2 was made in Wisdom for many good purposes. We see that creation in Genesis chapter 1 is a 6 day process starting with Genesis 1:1
