When Were Lucifer and Angels Created
This page focuses on the most likely time period where angels are created in the Bible. The Gap Theory (Gap Fact) believer is taught that angels are created in eternity past or before Genesis 1:1. This belief is solely based on the Job 38 passage discussed in the Foundations of the Earth pages previously on this website.
What you will see when you study the text below is that there is very specific texts about the creation of angels and specifically Lucifer. Unfortunately the Gap Fact crowd doesn’t address these questions in their books. They either don’t see this text in the Bible because they are coming to the Bible with a preconceived idea or they see this text and are choosing to ignore the obvious because it brings their doctrines about Creation into question…

Ezekiel 28:13-15 – 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou [art] the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee [so]: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Gap Fact Belief Premise:
They believe Lucifer and the angels were created before the earth was created in Genesis 1:1. Before the Beginning of time essentially. They have no idea how long the gap was or how time was tracked or when angels were made.

Peter Ruckman’s various views on how time was tracked and how long the gap was:
- However, Genesis 1:1 refers to a date much earlier, maybe millions of years. Nobody knows the exact time of the original creation of the world in verse 1 Reference: Peter Ruckman. Theological Studies, Book 16. 1988, p. 6)
- The last thing to notice about this opening verse in the Bible is that the date of creation is not given. Although a “recreation” is described in verses 2–20, no date is given for Genesis 1:1. We should notice this, as most college professors and high school teachers display their ignorance at this point. They assume that the Bible teaches that the earth is only 6,000 years old (dated according to Archbishop Ussher’s chronology). This is quite typical of Bible-rejecting education. (Very seldom do critics of the Bible have even a handful of facts with which to work.) The earth could have been here a good 4,000,000 years before God “recreated it” in seven evenings and mornings. Read the text closely; it is much more “scientific” than the superficial guesswork of Einstein, Darwin, Huxley,
Millikan, or Bernard Ramm.

When Was Lucifer Created?
Regarding the Gap Fact and creation of Lucifer and the Angels this next section is the elephant in the room/church.
Created on a Specific 24 Hour Day
The Holy Spirit went to the trouble to tell us two times using two separate terms that the cherub (Lucifer) in Ezekiel 28 was created on a specific 24 hour day.
- [Eze 28:13] thou hast been in eden the garden of god; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
- [Eze 28:15] thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Search the Phrase: “In The Day” + “Created” Eze 28:13
If you do a search in bible with the phrase “in the day” + the word “created“, There are 3 times it is used to describe the creation of a created being. Twice it is talking about the creation of Adam (Man) and the last is talking about Lucifer. We certainly all know and agree that Adam was created on a specific 24 hour day (Day 6). So letting scripture interpret scripture it only makes since that Lucifer was also created on a specific 24 hour day.
[Gen 5:1] This [is] the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
[Gen 5:2] Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
[Eze 28:13] Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
To deny this creates confusion and we know from scripture God is not the author of confusion.
[1Co 14:33 KJV] 33 For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Search the Phrase: “From the Day” Eze 28:15
If you do a search in the bible with the phrase “from the day” in the bible you will find its only in the bible 12 times. Each time the phrase in context is referring to the specific 24 hour day.
Lev 23:15, num 15:23, deu 9:7, deu 9:24, jdg 19:30, 2sa 13:32, 2sa 19:24, isa 7:17, jer 32:31, jer 36:2, eze 28:15, hag 2:18
When Was The First Day?
So if the bible teaches and clearly states Lucifer was created on a specific 24 hour day then he must have been created on or sometime after the first day…
The Bible tells us exactly when the first day happened.
[Gen 1:5 KJV] And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
What Day Were the Angels Created Then?
The Bible doesn’t tell us explicitly on what day of creation in the Gen 1 account.
However, it leaves some pretty good implications for when it likely happened Day 2
Remember the order God showed us with regards to the foundations of the earth? There we learned that without a doubt the foundations of the earth were laid on day 2 after He stretched the Heavens and created the firmament. If you look at the passage in psalms 104 there is more detail as to what happened in between the stretching of the heaven and the laying of the foundation. In this case our attention is drawn to verse 4:
Psalms 104:2-5
2 Who coverest [thyself] with light as [with] a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:
3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:
5 [Who] laid the foundations of the earth, [that] it should not be removed for ever.
Notice it fits perfectly with the rest of the bible including the Job 38 reference. The Angels were created after the heavens were stretched but before the foundations were laid when they shouted for joy.
To add further proof of God’s creative order illustrated in these verses we can look at the Zec 12:1 reference.
Zec 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
The Zec 12:1 reference adds mention of when God Formed Man on Day 6, which also is in perfect order. Remember God is not the author of confusion.
Another point to the order argument. Look at psalm 104:3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
Notice his chambers (the 3rd heaven) are laid in the waters. These are the waters from day 2 and the firmament creation when God divided the waters from the waters. Lots of examples of the perfect order matching the Genesis 1 account.
Notice also he maketh the clouds in the first heaven after he created the first and second heavens (plural) in psalm 104:2. This also fits perfectly with the with the Genesis 1 account of creation. [1Co 14:33 KJV] 33 For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Finally let me bring your attention to another biblical text that adds validity to this psalm 104 argument and day 2 of creation from Genesis 1.
Job 26:7 KJV – 7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, [and] hangeth the earth upon nothing.
Lets unpack this verse in Job 26:7
– stretcheth out the north refers to Psalm 104:2
– empty place is the earth because in Day 2 of creation the earth had no form yet, still had no inhabitants and was still empty. Interestingly the phrase “empty place” is translated from the Hebrew word Tou only one time in the bible this way. It is the same Hebrew word for “without form” in Genesis 1:2.
– hangeth the earth upon nothing. is a reference to laying the foundations in Psalm 104:5.
There is no confusion, just order…
Ignoring the Obvious
So, this begs the question. How is Lucifer Created “in the day” and “from the day” but also created before the First day?
God is NOT the author of confusion… Ignoring these phrases in Ezekiel 28 creates confusion.
The Bible says EXACTLY how time was tracked: in 24 hour days. The Bible says EXACTLY when the FIRST day started (Gen 1:1 – “In the BEGINNING”)and ended (Gen 1-5 – “first day”) .
The Bible definitively says Lucifer was created on a specific 24 hour day.
Hath God Said,
Did god really say Lucifer was created on a specific day?
Answer = Yes
Did god really say the first day ended in gen 1:5?
Answer = Yes
Implication:
Lucifer was not created until Day 2 of creation after the Firmament (multiple heavens) were stretched and after the beams of God’s chambers were laid in the waters.
Angels were not created in Gen 1:1 or eternity past as some believe.
God is not the author of confusion…
Next we will tackle the other question this Ezekiel 28 passage brings up for the Gap Fact. It shows a perfect pre-fallen Lucifer in the Garden of Eden. Let’s explore how they tackle this and compare what they say to scripture.
